Site Monsters

Friday was a day which our builders had talked about for some time – “not to be missed”, “invite your friends”, “get your camera ready”….. – and the day did not disappoint.

The monster crane arrived, somehow squeezing into our drive way, and anchoring itself in place. And so the lifting of some monster steels began.

The crane reached way above our existing house, way way above, generating comments like “are you building the Shard??”.

By end of the day, all the steels (bar one) were in place. Nice shiny bolts holding them in place, as well as the ridiculous weight of each one. We’re told that the last one to be put in place, above the double garage door, will take eight men to lift into place when the time is right.

So, now we can see roof heights, roof light space, bi-fold openings, room dimensions…..and our new home really taking shape!

Heavy day

Today was a heavy day. Heavy rain and heavy steels. Where the rain was making (more of) a mess of the site, the weight of the crane and concrete steels (they might be called this, probably not) were doing the same to our driveway, which is taking an unexpected battering over the weeks.

With tomorrow looking drier than today, here’s hoping that some of the new arrivals find their  permanent place in our home.
